Debunking the Myth and Embracing the Realities of Surrogacy in Canada

When stepping into the world of surrogacy, it’s tempting to believe there’s a “perfect surrogate” waiting out there — someone who ticks every box and guarantees a smooth journey. In Canada, where surrogacy operates under strict legal and ethical frameworks, this idea can be especially misleading.

Let’s flip the script: there is no such thing as the perfect surrogate.
But there are good, responsible, committed ones — and a system designed to help you find them.

The Canadian Context: Altruistic, Not Commercial

First, it’s important to understand how surrogacy works in Canada. Under the Assisted Human Reproduction Act (AHRA):

  • Surrogates cannot be paid for carrying a child.
  • Only reimbursement for out-of-pocket pregnancy-related expenses is allowed, with proper documentation.
  • Commercial agencies cannot “sell” surrogates or charge for match-making — they can only provide administrative and support services.

This means Canadian surrogacy is entirely altruistic — a surrogate must be motivated by compassion, not compensation. And while this limits financial incentives, it also narrows the pool to those who genuinely want to help someone build a family.

Why the ‘Perfect Surrogate’ Doesn’t Exist

In Canada, some intended parents search endlessly for the so-called “perfect” match — someone with flawless health, no complications, and the ideal personality. But here’s the truth:

Surrogacy is not a transaction. It’s a relationship.

And like any relationship, it’s complex, imperfect, and human. Even with the best planning, things can shift mid-journey — pregnancy outcomes, emotional dynamics, and personal boundaries are all moving parts.

No surrogate is perfect. No journey is without risk.

The Importance of Screening — and Realistic Expectations

Though perfection is a myth, rigorous screening is key to reducing risk and increasing the chance of a healthy, cooperative experience. In Canada, this often includes:

🧬 Medical Screening (via Fertility Clinics)

  • Past successful pregnancies with no major complications
  • No history of high-risk deliveries
  • General physical health and BMI within safe range

🧠 Psychological Assessment

  • Conducted by licensed professionals
  • Evaluates emotional readiness, motivation, and expectations
  • Identifies potential psychological risks

🤝 Values Alignment

It’s not just about health or paperwork. You need someone whose values match your own. Some key areas include:

  • Communication preferences
  • Views on medical decisions
  • Openness to future contact

Still — It’s Rolling the Dice

Even with all the screening, conversations, and contracts in place, surrogacy remains unpredictable. A well-matched journey can face:

  • Unexpected medical issues
  • Shifts in emotional or relational dynamics
  • Pregnancy loss or complications
  • Failed transfers or miscarriages

There’s no crystal ball. Screening helps reduce risks — but it cannot eliminate them. Guaranteed Packages at fertility clinics exist but are wrought with misleading presumptions that paying that high price tag will ensure a pregnancy. Those packages will only guarantee you get your fee partially refunded if it doesn’t work.

Some helpful reminders:

  • There is no perfect BMI that will make pregnancy work or not work. Women don’t come in the same shape or size and still get pregnant without issue.
  • Miscarriages happen for many reasons, but much of the time results are due to embryos and not your surrogate
  • Failed transfers have always been a normal occurrence. Does everyone who has unprotected sex at ovulation get pregnant? Nope.
  • It isn’t just science. If it was, we would have already figured out the ‘perfect’ protocol for getting a surrogate pregnant. There is no ‘perfect’ anything, otherwise all doctors would be singing the same tune. There are optimal situations only, but that’s a huge grey area.
  • Every fertility doctor has a different approach. They are all highly skilled at their profession but still won’t put a guaranteed stamp on a transfer.
  • The ‘Why Factor’ is always going to leave people stumped. If we always had a reason for why transfers didn’t work, there would be no ‘unexplained infertility’.
  • Let’s keep in mind, a surrogate is still a woman with fertility experience, who has a suitable uterus and is trying her best to help you.
  • Getting pregnant is not a phenomenon for surrogates. They are generally good at it and have carried to term with no issues. Your odds are already better having her in your corner.

Forget Perfect — Aim for Prepared

Instead of hunting for the flawless unicorn surrogate, shift your focus:

  • Look for someone with honesty, emotional maturity, and commitment.
  • Make space for mutual vulnerability — both sides are taking a leap.
  • Choose someone who’s well-supported by family or friends.

And most importantly — be ready for the unexpected.

Final Thoughts

Surrogacy in Canada is an act of profound trust and partnership. It’s not about perfection — it’s about two (or more) people coming together to build something extraordinary.

So let go of the myth of the perfect surrogate.
Instead, embrace the process, do your due diligence, and walk into it with eyes wide open. Because in Canadian surrogacy — no matter how carefully you plan — everything is still rolling the dice.

But with the right mindset, the right match, and the right support, those odds can still lead to something beautiful.
